Discovering the Journey to Buddhism

What drew my attention to it and encouraged me to adhere to its principles

I resonate with Buddhism. I perceive it as deeply accepting of humanity and imposes no strict rules on behavior. It acknowledges your mere existence and the temporary nature of time. With every fleeting moment, you allow your thoughts, feelings, actions, or lack thereof to flow by. It instills a sense of calm, even on your most exhausting days.

Buddhism introduced me to meditation. Who would have thought a simple act could be transformative? As I inhale, I am reminded of the persistent essence of life, of enjoying my own presence. The chaotic thoughts disperse, allowing me to dwell in ‘Nothingness’; it is truly wondrous.

To exist in nothingness, to recognize the sounds around you and let them drift away, to remain in the now instead of the past or future. You acknowledge the breathing being that you are. It’s a journey to anchor yourself and comprehend what it means to live, to acknowledge your ultimate purpose, which is to exist completely.

“The term ‘Bodhisattva’ in Buddhism refers to the enlightened one. An individual who has attained the path of enlightenment and, as a result, is capable of aiding humanity.”

My fascination with Buddhism began during my initial visit to a monastery in Bir, India. Sherabling Monastery was vast, adorned with exquisite tapestries depicting mythical creatures, Buddhist deities, and samsara. It felt both magnificent and serene.

I sensed a sense of belonging within that tranquility, silence, and ease. The calming aroma enveloped my spirit and soothed my mind. I positioned myself in a corner and engaged in meditation. It was challenging initially, yet I managed to do it; an experience I would cherish forever.

Amidst various meditation practices, I sought mantras to enhance my practice. The noise in my mind grew overwhelming, and I realized I needed an alternative to quieten my thoughts. I began with the heart sutra, which is the mantra of Avalokiteshvara.

Mantra of Avalokiteshvara

A mantra imbued with compassion.

Avalokiteshvara is a Buddhist Bodhisattva (an enlightened being) who gazes upon the world with compassionate eyes. Armed with a sword and a lotus, he symbolizes wisdom and purity to confront malevolence.

The Story of Avalokiteshvara

Chenrezig possesses four hands and gazes upon the world with compassionate eyes.

Throughout his days of reciting the mantra, Chenrezig discovered that his practices alleviated the suffering of many. However, when he witnessed the persistent evil in the world manifesting in various forms, it shattered Chenrezig, leading him to disintegrate into a thousand fragments.

“Until he regained his form, this time with eleven hands, and with his formidable presence, he persevered in his practice.”

Practicing the Mantra

This mantra calls for us to foster compassion toward other beings. Yet, we must first recognize and accept our own sufferings.

“Extend compassion toward other beings, open our eyes to their struggles, and offer them forgiveness.”

It is said that daily recitation and repetition can aid in concentrating on the present and releasing the clamor of our inner thoughts.

It allowed me to shed unwanted feelings and engage in the profound heart sutra, which enabled me to cultivate compassion for myself and others.
