**Spirituality: My Spiritual Journey is an Unforgettable Ride**

In the domain of spirituality, each person’s journey is intricately crafted with diverse experiences, convictions, and personal insights. My spiritual voyage has been an unforgettable ride that has taken me from a Buddhist upbringing through significant upheavals, leading to unforeseen revelations and a profound comprehension of my spiritual essence.

Growing up in Indonesia, my family’s relationship with spirituality was shaped by historical and cultural transformations. My father, a dedicated follower of the Yiguandao tradition, promoted practices that initially felt mandatory and lacked clarity. His commitment to religious activities such as temple visits and vegetarianism created a tension with my desire for personal insight.

The historical context of Indonesia, particularly the effects of political upheaval in the 1960s, greatly influenced the spiritual environment. The impact of General Suharto’s regime resulted in a fusion of religious practices to meet governmental expectations, where Buddhism evolved by incorporating elements that aligned with state mandates, such as representing Sang Hyang Adi-Buddha as a sacred figure.

During those formative years, the confusion surrounding religious identity left me unsettled. The limitations of Chinese culture and the adaptation strategies within Buddhism to endure under Suharto’s regime left a significant mark on me. I began to question the imposed practices and the rigidity of the faith I witnessed.

College provided an opportunity for respite and spiritual exploration. Initially hesitant, I discovered a community that accepted me without bias, allowing me to experience Buddhism outside of family-imposed stories. It wasn’t long before I became curious about how spirituality could exist independently of a worshipped deity.

In search of a broader experience, I ventured into Christianity by attending a charismatic church. The warm community and vibrant worship offered a striking contrast to my earlier encounters. However, despite the friendliness, a sermon that questioned the legitimacy of other spiritual paths resonated in a jarring way, deepening my self-reflection on uncritical faith.

This conflict led me to contemplate the teachings of Dhamma and Buddhism’s views on independence and compassion. The true insight lay not in institutional rituals but in the personal liberation from societal expectations. Realizing the potential for freedom in moving beyond dependence on a Supreme Being reoriented my spiritual direction.

Throughout this unforgettable ride, I have learned to forgive and rise above past familial discord, yet the journey of embracing compassion and releasing resentment continues. This transformation energizes my commitment to extend empathy to all living beings—a practice I strive to fully embody in the coming years.

At its core, spirituality is a dynamic tapestry of experiences. My path—from grappling with imposed customs to discovering a self-directed spiritual journey—highlights the significance of allowing self-exploration to shape one’s beliefs. Amid the unpredictability, I cling to the hope that shared narratives may motivate others to undertake their spiritual journeys with independence and compassion.
