Water over stones

A reflective poem about life

We are water
assuming the shape
of the things
beneath the surface
passing over rocks
misfortunes
some call them
those twists and turns
the disturbances
a consequence
of our travelling
they may at times
shape our thoughts
but they are not us
where we have been.
Moulds us
as the river bed
shapes the river
it may not be your choice
to travel the path you are on
but the river of life
down which we all travel
does not choose
it’s own destination
it’s passage
is an ancient route
cut out by time
and circumstance
no straight lines
from A to B
nothing that simple
nothing that mundane
we must learn
the lesson of water
move gracefully
flow freely
leave behind
the shapes of the shallows
as we head for deeper water
there nothing will disturb
our slow passage
towards peace
